On behalf of the hosting society, the European Association of Fish Pathologists e.V., and the local organizers at the Institute of Marine Biology, Biotechnology and Aquaculture of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, we are delighted to welcome you to the 22nd International Conference on Diseases of Fish and Shellfish (EAFP XXII), in Heraklion, Crete, from 1st to 5th September 2025.
After our last successful meeting in Aberdeen, Scotland, we are excited to continue bringing our community together to share knowledge, ideas, and research. This time, we will gather in Heraklion, Crete—a city full of history and surrounded by breathtaking natural beauty. Heraklion is the capital of Crete and a place of great historical significance. It was the center of the Minoan Civilization, one of Europe’s earliest and most advanced societies.
During your stay, we encourage you to explore sites like the famous Palace of Knossos and the Archaeological Museum, where you can step back in time and learn about Crete’s fascinating past. The city is also a vibrant and very popular tourist destination, known for its sunny beaches, crystal-clear waters, and warm hospitality. The conference venue, the Cultural Conference Center of Heraklion, is located in the heart of the city, making it easy to experience all that Heraklion has to offer. With its popularity as a destination, we strongly recommend making travel and accommodation arrangements as early as possible to ensure you get the best options.
This year, we’re proud to offer an exciting program featuring inspiring keynote speakers, 25 session topics, and eight workshops that aim to share new ideas and foster collaboration. We are confident that EAFP XXII in Heraklion will provide both high-quality scientific discussions and memorable experiences for everyone attending.
Lastly, we want to share a fun note about our conference logo. You might have noticed the circular labyrinth design—a tribute to the elaborate, confusing structure designed and built by the legendary artificer Daedalus for King Minos of Crete, at Knossos. Its function was to hold the Minotaur, the monster eventually killed by the hero Theseus. Daedalus had so cunningly made the Labyrinth that he could barely escape it after he built it. Some of you have remarked that it looks suspiciously like a fingerprint! Rest assured, this resemblance was not intentional, though we do hope it serves as a fitting metaphor for the unique and personal mark that each one of you will leave on this year’s conference.
We look forward to welcoming you to Heraklion this September for an event that will be both productive and enjoyable.
Warm regards,
Pantelis Katharios, Local Organizer EAFP XXI & Astrid Holzer, EAFP Meeting Secretary
